Newborn infection risk detected in hours with Light-Based score

NCT ID NCT07109856

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests a new, non-invasive tool called the POP-Score to predict infection in newborns within the first 6 hours of life. The score combines light-based measurements of muscle oxygen with routine vital signs like heart rate and blood pressure. Researchers will enroll 93 newborns with breathing problems to see if the score can accurately predict elevated infection markers within 48 hours.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could give doctors a simple, non-invasive way to spot infections in newborns hours earlier than current methods.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase study at one hospital. The score may not work as well in larger, more diverse groups or in real-world settings.
