Sound waves open brain barrier to attack deadly tumor

NCT ID NCT05864534

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This trial tests a new approach for glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer. A device implanted in the skull uses ultrasound to temporarily open the blood-brain barrier, allowing immune-boosting drugs to reach the tumor. The study involves 25 adults who have completed radiation, and aims to see if the combination is safe and extends survival.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Balstilimab, Botensilimab, Liposomal Doxorubicin

What this could lead to

If successful, this could offer a new way to treat glioblastoma by helping drugs reach the brain more effectively, potentially improving survival.

What could go wrong

This is an early phase 2a trial with only 25 people, so results may not apply widely. The treatment involves brain surgery to implant a device, and immune drugs can cause serious side effects.
