Nerve block may calm the body's stress response during thyroid surgery
NCT ID NCT07740460
First seen Jul 31, 2026 · Last updated Aug 07, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial tests whether an ultrasound-guided nerve block in the neck, given alongside general anesthesia, can reduce the body's stress response during thyroid surgery. The stress response involves inflammation and metabolic changes that can affect recovery. Half of the 48 participants will receive the nerve block plus standard anesthesia, while the other half will receive standard anesthesia alone. Blood samples will be taken before and after surgery to measure stress markers like cortisol and inflammatory proteins.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Ultrasound-guided bilateral intermediate cervical plexus block using 0.25% levobupivacaine
- What this could lead to
- If effective, this nerve block could become a standard part of anesthesia for thyroid surgery, potentially reducing surgical stress and improving recovery.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-phase trial, so results may not be conclusive. The block may not significantly reduce stress markers, and there are risks like infection or allergic reactions.
