Nature prescription: can a simple outdoor program improve life for dementia patients and their caregivers?

NCT ID NCT06451978

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This pilot study tests a caregiver-led nature-based intervention for people with mild cognitive impairment or dementia and their caregivers. 48 pairs (dyads) will be randomly assigned to either receive the 8-week nature activity manual immediately or join a waitlist. The goal is to see if this approach improves mental wellbeing and reduces depression and anxiety, and to inform a larger future study.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

nature-based intervention (manualised, caregiver-led activities)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could provide a simple, low-cost way to improve mental wellbeing for people with dementia and their caregivers using nature activities.

What could go wrong

This is a very small pilot study (48 participants) with no blinding, so results may not be reliable or generalizable. The intervention is not a treatment for dementia itself.
