Gift cards for good health: can rewards help native women kick the habit and shed pounds?

NCT ID NCT03528304

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested whether giving rewards like gift cards can help Native American women quit smoking and lose weight. 125 women who smoked daily and were overweight or obese took part. They earned prizes for staying smoke-free and losing a half to one pound per week. The goal was to see if this incentive-based approach works for both behaviors at once.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

contingency management (behavioral intervention using gift cards and prizes to reward healthy behaviors)

What this could lead to

If successful, this approach could offer a practical, incentive-based program to help Native women quit smoking and manage weight, reducing related health risks.

What could go wrong

This is a completed early-stage study with 125 participants, so results may not apply broadly. Behavioral interventions can be hard to sustain long-term, and weight loss or smoking cessation may not last.
