Could your muscle type predict diabetes? scientists launch Long-Term investigation

NCT ID NCT07678736

First seen Jul 01, 2026 · Last updated Jul 01, 2026

Summary

This study investigates how muscle fiber type and protein makeup relate to early insulin resistance, a key step before type 2 diabetes develops. Researchers will follow 250 healthy adults aged 20-30 for up to 20 years, using muscle biopsies, scans, and wearable sensors. The goal is to understand why some people develop insulin resistance and to find new ways to prevent diabetes.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this research could reveal early markers of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes, paving the way for targeted prevention strategies.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It may not prove cause and effect, and results may take years to translate into clinical practice.
