NCT ID NCT03771430
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looks at whether adding cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and exercise to knee replacement surgery helps reduce pain and improve function. About 282 adults with knee osteoarthritis are randomly assigned to one of three groups: a non-surgical program with CBT and exercise, surgery followed by CBT and exercise, or surgery with standard care. The main goal is to measure changes in knee pain using a patient questionnaire.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
cognitive behavioral therapy and exercise
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that combining therapy and exercise with surgery reduces pain and improves recovery for knee osteoarthritis patients.
What could go wrong
This is a mid-sized trial, and the benefits may not apply to all patients. The added therapy may not significantly improve outcomes over standard care.
