Could regular MRIs replace invasive biopsies for prostate cancer monitoring?
NCT ID NCT06280781
First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study compares regular MRI scans to standard care for men with low- to medium-risk prostate cancer who choose active surveillance (monitoring instead of immediate treatment). The goal is to see if MRIs can detect cancer progression earlier and more accurately, potentially reducing the number of biopsies and other tests. Over 1,200 participants will be followed for 5 years to measure cancer progression rates and cost-effectiveness for the NHS.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- MRI scans
- What this could lead to
- If successful, regular MRI scans could become the new standard for monitoring low- to medium-risk prostate cancer, catching progression earlier and reducing the need for invasive biopsies.
- What could go wrong
- This is a large trial but still ongoing, and results may show that regular MRIs don't significantly improve detection or are not cost-effective for the NHS. MRI also has limitations and may miss some cancers.
