Could an MRI before surgery save pancreatic cancer patients from unnecessary knife?
NCT ID NCT05428358
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study is testing whether adding an MRI scan to the usual CT scan helps doctors make better decisions about surgery for pancreatic cancer. About 200 patients who are initially thought to be candidates for surgery will be randomly assigned to get either a standard CT alone or a CT plus an MRI. The goal is to see if the MRI finds hidden cancer spread (liver metastases) that would change the treatment plan, potentially avoiding unnecessary operations.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Preoperative MRI scan
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that adding an MRI helps doctors avoid unnecessary surgeries by finding hidden liver metastases, leading to more appropriate treatment plans.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small, early-phase study. The MRI might not find enough additional metastases to change treatment decisions, or it could lead to false positives that cause unnecessary delays.
