New MRI technique may replace painful liver biopsies for hepatitis b patients

NCT ID NCT06779058

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looks at whether magnetic resonance elastography (MRE), a special type of MRI, can accurately measure liver scarring (fibrosis) in people with chronic hepatitis B. Researchers will compare MRE results to standard liver biopsies in 600 adults. If MRE works well, it could offer a safer, non-invasive way to monitor liver health over time.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) imaging

What this could lead to

If successful, MRE could become a reliable, non-invasive way to monitor liver fibrosis, reducing the need for painful liver biopsies.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. MRE accuracy may vary, and it is not yet proven to replace biopsy in all cases.
