Mind over movement: mental rehearsal may ease Parkinson's balance fears

NCT ID NCT07495462

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether adding motor imagery—mentally practicing movements without actually moving—to standard physical therapy can improve balance and reduce fear of movement in people with Parkinson's disease. Forty-two participants will be randomly assigned to receive either standard rehab alone or standard rehab plus motor imagery training for six weeks. Researchers will measure changes in balance, fear of movement, and other motor functions at the start, end of treatment, and at a 12-week follow-up.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Motor imagery training (mental practice of movements) added to conventional rehabilitation

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a simple, safe way to improve balance and reduce fear of falling for people with Parkinson's disease.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 42 participants. The results may not apply to everyone with Parkinson's, and the added benefit of motor imagery over standard rehab alone may be small or none.
