Mothers as health detectives: simple arm tape could save malnourished kids from relapse
NCT ID NCT06599580
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether training caregivers to use a simple arm tape (mid-upper arm circumference) can detect malnutrition relapse in children who have recovered from severe acute malnutrition. About 2,400 children aged 6-54 months in Burkina Faso will be split into three groups: one where caregivers screen weekly with the tape and follow the usual monthly clinic visits, one where they screen weekly but have fewer clinic visits, and one with standard care (no caregiver screening, monthly visits). The goal is to see if caregiver screening reduces the risk of relapse and is acceptable to families.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Training caregivers to use mid-upper arm circumference tapes to screen children for malnutrition relapse
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this approach could empower caregivers to detect malnutrition relapse early, reducing the need for frequent clinic visits and improving child health outcomes.
- What could go wrong
- This is a relatively small, early-stage trial in one region, so results may not apply elsewhere. Caregiver screening might miss some cases or lead to unnecessary clinic visits.
