Oxford scientists probe why nerve exercises ease carpal tunnel pain
NCT ID NCT05859412
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study from the University of Oxford aims to understand how specific physiotherapy exercises (neurodynamic exercises) work for carpal tunnel syndrome. Researchers will compare these exercises to standard steroid injections and simple advice in 78 patients with mild to moderate carpal tunnel syndrome, plus 30 healthy volunteers. Using advanced MRI scans, nerve tests, and blood samples, they hope to uncover the biological mechanisms behind the exercises' effects.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Neurodynamic exercises (nerve and tendon gliding exercises) and steroid injection (Depomedrone 40mg)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help doctors better target physiotherapy exercises to patients who will benefit most, potentially reducing the need for surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage mechanistic study focused on understanding how treatments work, not on proving they are effective. Results may not change clinical practice directly.
