New procedure aims to cut repeat brain bleed surgeries
NCT ID NCT07626671
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests a minimally invasive procedure called middle meningeal artery embolization (MMAE) for chronic subdural hematoma, a common brain bleed in older adults. The procedure blocks the blood supply to the hematoma membrane to prevent rebleeding. Researchers will follow 100 patients for 4 months to see if it reduces hematoma size, improves function, and lowers the need for repeat surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Middle meningeal artery embolization (minimally invasive procedure to block blood flow to the hematoma membrane)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could establish a standard follow-up and identify which patients benefit most from MMA embolization, reducing the need for repeat surgeries.
- What could go wrong
- This is a single-center registry with only 100 patients, so results may not apply broadly. The procedure itself carries small risks like bleeding or stroke, and it may not work for everyone.
