New procedure aims to stop brain bleeds from coming back
NCT ID NCT06163547
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial tests a procedure called middle meningeal artery (MMA) embolization for people with chronic subdural hematomas—a buildup of blood on the brain that can cause confusion and weakness. The study will see if blocking the artery that feeds the hematoma can prevent it from returning after surgery or even treat it without surgery. About 180 adults with symptomatic or stubborn hematomas will take part across multiple centers.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Middle meningeal artery embolization (a minimally invasive procedure that blocks blood flow to the hematoma)
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could offer a less invasive way to treat chronic subdural hematomas and reduce the need for repeat surgeries.
- What could go wrong
- This is a mid-stage trial with 180 participants, so results are not yet proven. The procedure carries risks like bleeding or allergic reaction to contrast dye, and it may not work for everyone.
