Meditation may boost breastmilk for NICU moms, study hopes
NCT ID NCT07351799
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether teaching mindfulness and meditation to mothers with babies in the neonatal ICU can increase breastmilk volume and reduce stress. Forty mothers will be split into two groups: one gets standard care, the other adds mindfulness training. Researchers will measure milk output, stress hormones, and anxiety levels over 20 days.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
mindfulness and meditation based lactation education
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a simple, drug-free way to help NICU mothers increase breastmilk supply and lower stress.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early study with only 40 participants, so results may not apply to all mothers. It also relies on self-reported data, which can be unreliable.
