New therapy could beat CBT for anxiety – but is it too early to tell?
NCT ID NCT06937892
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether a newer type of talk therapy called transdiagnostic metacognitive therapy (tMCT) works better than standard cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for people with generalized anxiety, social anxiety, or PTSD. About 86 adults in Sweden will receive either tMCT or CBT, and their symptoms will be tracked for a year. The goal is to see if tMCT leads to greater improvement and is more cost-effective.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
transdiagnostic metacognitive therapy (tMCT) and disorder-specific cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)
What this could lead to
If tMCT proves superior, it could offer a simpler, more effective treatment for multiple anxiety disorders, potentially improving remission rates and reducing dropout.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small trial (86 participants) comparing two active therapies, so any advantage may be modest or not generalizable. Both treatments require skilled therapists, and results depend on long-term follow-up.
