First seen Aug 14, 2026 ยท Last updated Aug 14, 2026

Summary

This study is testing a new approach for young adults (ages 18-26) with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) who have experienced childhood trauma. The treatment combines the substance MDMA with talk therapy sessions, known as MDMA-assisted therapy. The main goals are to see if the treatment is safe and feasible, and whether it can reduce PTSD symptoms. Participants will receive up to three MDMA dosing sessions, each surrounded by preparatory and integration talk therapy, and will be followed for about 38 weeks with assessments including brain scans.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ€” not medical advice or a prediction.

MDMA combined with psychotherapy (talk therapy)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a new treatment option for young adults with PTSD, especially those with childhood trauma, potentially reducing symptoms and improving quality of life.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage pilot study, so results may not be conclusive or generalizable. MDMA is a controlled substance with potential psychological and physical risks, and the therapy requires careful medical supervision.
