This study watches how carbon dioxide gas, used to inflate the belly during laparoscopic weight-loss surgery, changes blood bicarbonate levels. Researchers will track 85 adults having sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass to see if these changes relate to how long the gas is used and whether patients can leave the hospital within 48 hours. No new treatments are being tested; the goal is simply to learn more about the body's response during surgery.
