Could cutting more gut tissue stop Crohn's from coming back?
NCT ID NCT06856044
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether removing extra tissue (the mesentery) during standard Crohn's surgery is safe and helps prevent the disease from returning. About 30 adults with Crohn's disease who are already on biotherapy will undergo this procedure. The main goal is to see if the surgery causes more complications than usual, and if it lowers the chance of inflammation coming back within 6 months.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- ileocolic resection with extended mesenteric resection (surgical procedure)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this surgical technique could lower the chance of Crohn's disease coming back after surgery, reducing the need for repeat operations.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early pilot study with only 30 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The surgery carries standard risks like bleeding or infection, and it's unclear if removing more tissue is truly better than the standard approach.
