New cocktail of cancer drugs targets brain metastases in melanoma patients

NCT ID NCT03175432

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This Phase 2 trial tests whether combining bevacizumab (Avastin) with atezolizumab (Tecentriq), with or without cobimetinib (Cotellic), can shrink or control melanoma that has spread to the brain. The study enrolls 29 adults with untreated brain metastases who are not taking steroids or are on a low dose. Researchers will measure how well the tumors respond inside the brain and track side effects.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

bevacizumab (Avastin), atezolizumab (Tecentriq), and cobimetinib (Cotellic)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could point toward a new treatment option for melanoma that has spread to the brain, potentially shrinking or controlling brain tumors.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial (Phase 2) with only 29 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The drug combination can cause serious side effects like bleeding, immune reactions, and organ inflammation.
