New EHR alert aims to catch silent liver damage in primary care
NCT ID NCT07159386
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether a simple electronic health record alert can help primary care doctors identify patients with fatty liver disease who may have advanced liver scarring. The alert prompts doctors to calculate a risk score and, if needed, order a special ultrasound to check for fibrosis. Researchers will track how often doctors use the tool and how many cases of advanced fibrosis are detected.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
EHR alert and clinical decision support tool
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a simple, scalable way for primary care doctors to catch serious liver scarring early in people with fatty liver disease.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage implementation study, not a treatment trial. The alert may not change doctor behavior or improve patient outcomes, and results may not apply outside this health system.
