Tiny study tests if DNA can decide how much thyroid to remove

NCT ID NCT06235814

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This pilot study tested whether routine genetic analysis of thyroid cancer samples could help surgeons decide how much of the thyroid to remove. Only 2 patients were enrolled. The goal was to see if a larger trial is possible, not to change treatment yet.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this approach could help doctors decide whether to remove part or all of the thyroid gland based on the cancer's genetic risk, potentially avoiding unnecessary surgery.

What could go wrong

This was a very small pilot study with only 2 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The main goal was to test feasibility, not to prove the approach works.
