Urine test may spot hidden thyroid cancer, avoid unnecessary surgery
NCT ID NCT05463107
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looks at whether proteins found in urine can help doctors diagnose follicular thyroid cancer before surgery. Currently, this type of thyroid cancer can only be confirmed after removing the thyroid. Researchers will collect urine samples from 50 patients with thyroid nodules or known thyroid cancers to see if certain proteins can accurately predict cancer. If the approach works, it could spare many patients from unnecessary surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a simple urine test to diagnose follicular thyroid cancer without needing surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early study with only 50 participants. The urine biomarkers may not prove accurate enough for routine use.
