Magnetic seizures could replace ECT for schizophrenia

NCT ID NCT06672588

First seen Nov 17, 2025 · Last updated Apr 29, 2026 · Updated 23 times

Summary

This study tests if magnetic seizure therapy (MST) can safely improve symptoms and thinking in people with schizophrenia that hasn't responded to standard medications. About 80 adults with treatment-resistant schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder will receive MST, which uses magnets to trigger a controlled seizure instead of electricity like ECT. The goal is to see if MST works as well as ECT but with fewer side effects.
