Neck surgery aims to flush Alzheimer's proteins from the brain
NCT ID NCT07458620
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This early-stage trial tests whether a minimally invasive neck surgery, called lymphaticovenular anastomosis (LVA), is safe for people with Alzheimer's disease. The surgery connects tiny lymph vessels in the neck to nearby veins, creating a detour to help the brain drain harmful waste proteins. Thirty-five participants will be followed for 12 months to check for side effects and measure changes in memory and brain scans.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Supermicrosurgical Lymphaticovenular Anastomosis (LVA) surgery
What this could lead to
If safe, this could point toward a new surgical approach to help the brain clear harmful proteins, potentially slowing Alzheimer's progression.
What could go wrong
This is a very early Phase 1 safety trial with only 35 people. The surgery is invasive and may not improve symptoms; risks include surgical complications and anesthesia side effects.
