Blood test could revolutionize Alzheimer's diagnosis, reducing need for spinal taps and scans

NCT ID NCT07680335

First seen Jul 02, 2026 · Last updated Jul 02, 2026

Summary

This study looks at whether measuring certain proteins in the blood (p-tau217 and neurofilament light) can help doctors diagnose Alzheimer's disease more quickly and confidently in people with memory problems. About 550 participants visiting a memory clinic will have their blood tested, and researchers will track how the results change the diagnosis and the doctor's certainty. The goal is to see if blood-based biomarkers can replace or reduce the need for more invasive or expensive tests like spinal taps or brain scans.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Plasma p-tau217 and neurofilament light chain blood test

What this could lead to

If successful, this could make Alzheimer's diagnosis faster, less invasive, and more accessible, helping patients get the right care sooner.

What could go wrong

The study is observational and does not test a treatment. Blood tests may not be accurate enough in all cases, and results may not change how doctors manage patients.
