Mobile CT vans aim to detect lung cancer in smokers as young as 40
NCT ID NCT04577599
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study uses mobile low-dose CT scans to screen for lung cancer in people aged 40-54 who have a heavy smoking history (30 pack-years or more). Participants in North and South Carolina will get up to three scans over time. The goal is to see if screening younger high-risk smokers can catch lung cancer at an earlier, more treatable stage.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Mobile low-dose CT scan
What this could lead to
If successful, this could expand lung cancer screening to younger high-risk smokers, catching cancer earlier and saving more lives.
What could go wrong
This is an observational screening study, not a treatment trial. It may not prove that earlier detection improves survival in this age group, and false positives could cause unnecessary stress or procedures.
