Experimental bone putty for spinal surgery falls short in early trial
NCT ID NCT01335243
First seen Jun 23, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026
Summary
This study tested a special bone graft material (MatriBONE mixed with the patient's own bone marrow) for spinal fusion surgery in people with painful degenerative back problems. The goal was to see how well the bones fused together after 12 months. However, the trial was stopped early, so we don't have clear results on whether it worked better than standard treatments.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
MatriBONE (a collagen scaffold with tri-calcium phosphate) combined with the patient's own bone marrow
What this could lead to
If successful, this approach could offer a safer alternative to traditional bone grafts for spinal fusion surgery.
What could go wrong
The trial was terminated early, so we don't have enough data to know if it works. It was also a small, early-phase study.
