Can a peptide shield kidneys during bypass surgery? new trial aims to find out
NCT ID NCT05879432
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This Phase 2 trial tests whether the drug LSALT peptide can prevent or reduce acute kidney injury in 240 adults undergoing on-pump cardiac surgery. Participants receive either the drug or a placebo before surgery, and doctors monitor kidney function for a week. The goal is to see if the drug lowers the risk of kidney damage, which is a common complication after heart surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
LSALT peptide (Metablok)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a new way to prevent kidney damage during heart surgery, reducing complications and recovery time.
What could go wrong
This is a Phase 2 trial with only 240 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. The drug may not reduce kidney injury more than a placebo, and side effects are still being studied.
