Heart failure patients may not need to cut salt so much, new study suggests
NCT ID NCT07560592
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study compares a low-sodium (2 g/day) diet to a regular diet (3-4 g/day) in 500 adults hospitalized for heart failure. The goal is to see if a low-sodium diet actually reduces hospital stay length and 30-day readmission rates. Participants follow the assigned diet only while in the hospital, then return to standard care after discharge.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
low-sodium diet (2 g Na/day) vs regular diet (3-4 g Na/day)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could show that a regular diet is safe for heart failure patients, potentially easing dietary restrictions.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage study with only 500 participants, and diet adherence can be hard to control. Results may not apply to all heart failure patients.
