Tube in the bowel offers hope for stubborn constipation
NCT ID NCT07160192
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study follows 80 adults who had a tube placed into their bowel (called a percutaneous endoscopic caecostomy, or PEC) to treat severe chronic constipation that didn't improve with standard treatments. Researchers will check long-term quality of life and how well the tube works by phone interviews and questionnaires. The goal is to see if this procedure is a safe and effective long-term solution.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
percutaneous endoscopic caecostomy (PEC) tube
What this could lead to
If successful, this could confirm that a PEC tube is a safe and effective long-term option for people with severe constipation that hasn't responded to other treatments.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study, not a controlled trial, so it cannot prove cause and effect. Results may be limited by the small number of participants (80) and the single-center design.
