Rituximab shows promise for long-term control of rare blistering skin disease
NCT ID NCT03790293
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study followed 80 patients with pemphigus, a rare autoimmune disease that causes painful blisters on skin and mucous membranes. Researchers wanted to see how safe and effective rituximab (a drug that targets certain immune cells) is over the long term, compared to standard high-dose steroids. The goal was to check for serious side effects, relapse rates, and how the immune system changes years after treatment.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Rituximab
What this could lead to
If successful, this could confirm that rituximab provides long-term remission with fewer side effects than standard steroids.
What could go wrong
This is a follow-up study, not a new treatment trial. It may show that benefits fade over time or that long-term immune suppression raises infection risks.
