Can engineered immune cells tame autoimmune disease?
NCT ID NCT06318533
First seen Aug 11, 2026 · Last updated Aug 14, 2026 · Updated 3 times
Summary
This early-phase trial is testing whether a single infusion of engineered immune cells, called CAR NK cells, can safely and effectively treat people with moderate to severe autoimmune diseases that have not improved with standard treatment. The study will enroll 15 adults and will first assess safety, then look at how well the cells control the disease and how long they last in the body. The approach involves a short course of chemotherapy before the cell infusion to help the cells engraft.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) NK cells, given after a short course of chemotherapy (fludarabine and cyclophosphamide)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could lead to a new treatment option for people with autoimmune diseases that haven't responded to standard therapies, potentially resetting the immune system.
- What could go wrong
- This is a very early, small trial (15 people) focused mainly on safety. The treatment may not work, and there are risks of side effects from the chemotherapy and the cell infusion, including immune reactions.
