New chemo combo targets Hard-to-Treat liver cancer
NCT ID NCT04251715
First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This early-phase trial tested a two-step chemotherapy approach for people with a type of liver cancer (intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma) that cannot be surgically removed. First, patients received a standard chemo mix (mFOLFIRINOX) through the veins. Then, they got a second chemo drug (floxuridine) plus dexamethasone directly into the liver artery, along with more systemic chemo. The goal was to control the cancer while limiting side effects. However, the study was stopped early after enrolling only 5 people, so we have very little data on how well it works or its safety.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- mFOLFIRINOX, floxuridine, dexamethasone, mFOLFIRI
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this approach could offer a new way to control liver-dominant cholangiocarcinoma that cannot be surgically removed.
- What could go wrong
- This trial was terminated early with only 5 participants, so results are very limited. The combination chemotherapy also carries risks of liver toxicity and other side effects.
