Blood test may cut unnecessary lung cancer scans in High-Risk groups

NCT ID NCT07358715

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study is testing whether a blood test (liquid biopsy) can be used as a first step to screen for lung cancer in high-risk people, before deciding if they need a low-dose CT scan. The goal is to reduce unnecessary scans, radiation exposure, and healthcare costs. The study will enroll 140 participants, including smokers and never-smokers with a family history of lung cancer.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Liquid biopsy (SPOT-MAS assay and exosome-based assay)

What this could lead to

If successful, this blood test could help avoid unnecessary CT scans and radiation exposure for many people at high risk for lung cancer, making screening more efficient and affordable.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early feasibility study (140 participants). The blood test may not be accurate enough to replace CT scans, and results may not apply to all populations.
