New pain block could keep lung surgery patients comfortable for days

NCT ID NCT07134660

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study compares a long-acting painkiller (liposomal bupivacaine) to a standard one (bupivacaine hydrochloride) for numbing nerves between the ribs during lung surgery. About 210 adults having keyhole lung surgery will be randomly assigned to one of three groups: the long-acting block, the standard block, or no block. The goal is to see if the long-acting version provides better pain control from 25 to 72 hours after surgery, which could reduce opioid use and help patients recover faster.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

liposomal bupivacaine

What this could lead to

If it works, this could provide longer-lasting pain relief after lung surgery, reducing the need for opioids and speeding recovery.

What could go wrong

This is a mid-sized trial (210 people) and the effect may be modest. The long-acting version is more expensive, and not all patients may benefit.
