Could a simple painkiller prevent lung failure after emergency surgery?

NCT ID NCT06304779

First seen Apr 29, 2026 · Last updated May 16, 2026 · Updated 3 times

Summary

This study tests whether giving a continuous 24-hour intravenous infusion of lidocaine (a common local anesthetic) can lower the risk of serious lung complications after emergency abdominal surgery for an infection inside the belly. About 428 adults undergoing such surgery will be randomly assigned to receive either lidocaine or a placebo. The main goal is to see if lidocaine reduces the rate of lung problems like pneumonia or the need for a breathing machine within two days after surgery.
