Beeping breathing aids could cut Post-Surgery lung risks
NCT ID NCT06304493
First seen Jun 30, 2026 · Last updated Jul 01, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether adding visual and sound reminders to a standard breathing exercise device (incentive spirometer) helps patients use it more often after surgery. About 231 adults who had surgery under general anesthesia will be split into two groups: one using the device with reminders, the other without. The goal is to see if reminders increase how often patients take deep breaths, which may help prevent lung complications like pneumonia.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
incentive spirometry with electronic reminders
What this could lead to
If it works, this could show a simple way to help patients do breathing exercises more often after surgery, potentially reducing lung problems.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study focused on short-term use in one hospital. The reminders may not improve outcomes or could be annoying to patients.
