Can spleen surgery shield kidneys in cirrhosis? new study aims to find out

NCT ID NCT07585773

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study follows 30 adults with liver cirrhosis who are having their spleen removed (laparoscopic splenectomy) to treat an enlarged spleen and low blood counts. Researchers will measure kidney function before surgery and for two years after to see if the surgery helps or harms the kidneys. The goal is to better understand how to protect kidney health in people with cirrhosis.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
laparoscopic splenectomy (surgical removal of the spleen)
What this could lead to
If successful, this study could clarify whether removing the spleen helps protect kidney function in cirrhosis patients, potentially guiding future treatment decisions.
What could go wrong
This is a small, observational study (30 people) at a single center, so results may not apply widely. It only measures changes, not proving cause and effect.
