Could a seizure drug ease chronic pancreatitis pain and reduce opioid side effects?

NCT ID NCT05603702

First seen Mar 18, 2026 · Last updated Apr 29, 2026 · Updated 3 times

Summary

This early-phase study tests whether adding lacosamide, a seizure medication, to standard opioid therapy is safe and tolerable for people with chronic pancreatitis and ongoing abdominal pain. About 24 adults who have been on opioids for at least 4 weeks will take lacosamide for 7 days, and researchers will monitor side effects, compliance, and pain scores. The goal is to see if this combination can reduce pain and the condition called opioid-induced hyperalgesia (increased pain sensitivity from opioids).
