ER CT scan could keep heart patients out of hospital

NCT ID NCT07002450

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether a special CT scan done in the emergency department can quickly check for blood clots in people with atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter. If no clot is found, doctors can proceed with a procedure to restore normal heart rhythm (cardioversion) right away. The goal is to see if this approach reduces hospital admissions and repeat ER visits compared to the usual care. About 190 adults with symptomatic atrial fibrillation who need heart imaging before cardioversion will take part.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Cardiac computed tomography angiography (CCT)

What this could lead to

If successful, this approach could allow more patients with atrial fibrillation to be treated quickly in the emergency department without being admitted to the hospital.

What could go wrong

This is a relatively small, early-stage trial (190 participants) testing a diagnostic strategy, not a treatment. The CT scan involves radiation and contrast dye, which carry their own risks.
