Gum surgery boost: could a blood clot improve healing?

NCT ID NCT06296498

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested whether adding a substance made from the patient's own blood (L-PRF) to standard gum surgery improves healing and reduces pain. Twenty-one adults with gum disease had both types of surgery on different sides of their mouth. Researchers measured pocket depth and pain levels to compare the two approaches.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Leukocyte and platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could lead to a simple way to improve gum surgery outcomes and reduce patient pain.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early study with only 21 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The benefits of L-PRF are still uncertain.
