This trial is taking on new participants right now.
Not yet recruiting
Registered, but not yet taking participants.
By invitation only
Not open to general applications. Only people the study team invites can take part.
Paused
Paused for now. It may or may not start again.
Ongoing
Running, but no longer taking on new participants.
Completed
The trial has finished. Results may not be published yet.
Stopped early
Stopped early, before it reached the end. That can be for many reasons, including safety.
Cancelled
Cancelled before anyone took part.

Expanded access (not trials)

Expanded access
Not a trial. This treatment can be requested outside a study, case by case, for people who qualify.
Expanded access (paused)
Not a trial. The treatment can normally be requested outside a study, but is unavailable right now.
Expanded access (ended)
Not a trial. The treatment could once be requested outside a study, but no longer can.
Approved
The treatment has been approved, so it is available normally rather than through this programme.

Summary

Researchers at Afyonkarahisar Health Sciences University are studying whether blood levels of certain enzymes differ between women with knee osteoarthritis and healthy women. The enzymes, lysyl oxidase and lysyl hydroxylase, help build and cross-link collagen, the main structural protein in cartilage. The study enrolls 200 women aged 40 to 70, some with knee osteoarthritis at various stages and some without, and compares their enzyme levels alongside ultrasound measurements of knee cartilage thickness.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to
If enzyme levels track with osteoarthritis severity, doctors might one day use a simple blood test to gauge joint damage or spot the disease earlier.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study, so it cannot prove that these enzymes cause osteoarthritis or that changing them helps. A single blood measurement also captures only one moment in a long, slowly changing disease.

Who is studied

The study population will consist of female volunteers aged 40-70 years who are either diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis or are healthy controls without clinical or radiographic evidence of osteoarthritis. Participants will be recruited from the outpatient clinic of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Afyonkarahisar Health Sciences University (AFSU). All participants will meet the inclusion criteria and provide written informed consent prior to enrollment. Individuals with metabolic diseases, inflammatory arthritis, or significant comorbidities will be excluded.
