Could a drug switch save transplanted kidneys?

NCT ID NCT05917522

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looks at whether switching kidney transplant patients from a standard drug (tacrolimus) to abatacept can improve kidney function and quality of life. It involves 800 participants, with 300 randomly assigned to either the new drug or standard care. The goal is to see if the switch leads to better outcomes without increasing rejection risk.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Abatacept (Orencia)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could offer a way to improve long-term kidney function and reduce side effects for transplant recipients.

What could go wrong

This is a Phase 2 trial, so results are still uncertain. The switch may not work for everyone and could increase the risk of rejection.
