Tiny study tests supplement to wake up 'dead' kidneys

NCT ID NCT07555327

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This completed study tested an oral supplement made from generally recognized as safe (GRAS) ingredients in 8 people with end-stage kidney disease. Two participants had not produced urine for 16 and 22 years. The goal was to see if the supplement could restore even a small amount of urine output and improve kidney markers. Because the study is very small and observational, the results are not conclusive.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

oral nutritional supplement (GRAS ingredients)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a way to restore some kidney function in patients with end-stage renal disease, potentially reducing dialysis dependence.

What could go wrong

This is a very small, early observational study with only 8 participants. The results may not apply to others, and the supplement is not a proven treatment.
