Could diabetes be silently damaging your hearing?
NCT ID NCT03437135
First seen Aug 10, 2026 · Last updated Aug 11, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study investigates whether hearing problems are an under-recognized complication of diabetes. Researchers will screen 172 adults with type 1 or type 2 diabetes using hearing tests and a questionnaire. If a hearing issue is found, a more detailed assessment will be done to determine if the problem is in the ear or the auditory nerve. The goal is to better understand the link between diabetes and hearing loss.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Hearing screening tests and a questionnaire (Glasgow Hearing Status Inventory)
- What this could lead to
- If this works, it could establish hearing loss as a common complication of diabetes and lead to routine hearing checks for diabetic patients.
- What could go wrong
- This is an observational screening study, not a treatment trial. It may not prove that diabetes causes hearing loss, and results may not apply to all diabetic patients.
