Can a drug cocktail stop Post-Surgery brain fog in seniors?
NCT ID NCT07627906
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares two drug combinations—ketofol (ketamine plus propofol) and ketodex (ketamine plus dexmedetomidine)—to see which better prevents postoperative delirium in patients 60 and older undergoing open cancer surgery in the pelvis or abdomen. Delirium is a common, serious complication that can lead to longer hospital stays and worse outcomes. The trial will enroll 180 people and measure confusion two hours after surgery using a standard test.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Ketofol (ketamine and propofol mixture) and Ketodex (ketamine and dexmedetomidine mixture)
- What this could lead to
- If one of these drug combos works better, it could give doctors a simple way to prevent serious confusion after major cancer surgery in older patients.
- What could go wrong
- This is a single-center trial with 180 people, so results may not apply to everyone. Both combos have side effects like low blood pressure or slow heart rate, and it's unclear if either will truly prevent delirium.
