NCT ID NCT05681468
First seen Jan 09, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 23 times
Summary
This study is testing whether a keto diet using healthy unsaturated fats (like canola oil) is better for heart health and inflammation than a keto diet high in saturated fats or a standard low-fat diet. Researchers will enroll 175 adults who are overweight or have prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. Participants will follow one of three diets for 6 months, and the team will measure blood fats, blood sugar, and markers of inflammation.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
ketogenic diet (with saturated or unsaturated fat) and low-fat diet
What this could lead to
If it works, this could show that a keto diet with healthy oils (like canola) is better for heart health than a traditional high-saturated-fat keto diet in people with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.
What could go wrong
This is a diet study, not a drug trial, so results depend heavily on people sticking to the diet. It is also relatively small (175 people) and only lasts 6 months, so long-term effects are unknown.
Conditions
