Could a single dose of ketamine during surgery cut opioid use and PTSD?

NCT ID NCT06903819

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether a single dose of ketamine given during surgery can help adults with serious orthopedic trauma recover better. Researchers want to see if it reduces pain, lowers the need for opioids, and improves symptoms of depression and PTSD. Ninety participants will be randomly assigned to receive either ketamine or standard anesthesia, and will be followed for six months.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

ketamine

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a way to reduce opioid use and improve mental health recovery after serious orthopedic surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial with only 90 participants. Ketamine may not reduce pain or opioid use more than standard care, and it can cause side effects like hallucinations or nausea.
